Economic Survey 2023-2024

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the Economic Survey 2023-24 in Parliament on July 22, 2024. The Economic Survey is an annual report by the Government of India that provides an overview of the state of the Indian economy. It includes an analysis of economic performance, key trends, and the outlook for the current financial year, along with policy initiatives and reforms.

The importance of “Thahraav,” or contentment, is emphasized as a state of internal stability and equanimity that enables individuals to prepare for and accept external changes. This contrasts with modern consumption-driven lifestyles, where individualism and the desire for more have led to overconsumption, waste, and environmental harm. The text argues that true sustainability requires addressing the root causes of this consumption rather than just focusing on shifting to renewable resources, highlighting the growing disconnect between social values and sustainable living.

According to the IFC, the world generates over 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, which is expected to increase by 70% by 2050. The hunger to consume more and more means we keep missing the bus in the global discourse on sustainability by constantly suggesting rewiring the pathways to renewables rather than attacking the root of the problem—treating the symptoms to cure a growing disease.
