Hotels/Restaurants cannot add service charge automatically or by default

The Consumer Affairs Ministry has issued a press release stipulating that hotels or restaurants shall not automatically add a service charge to a food bill by default. No hotel or restaurant shall force a consumer to pay a service charge and must clearly inform the consumer that the service charge is voluntary, optional, and at the consumer’s discretion. This empowers customers to make informed decisions and encourages businesses to focus on providing excellent service, as the choice to tip will now be directly linked to customer satisfaction.
